두 번째의 언급은 느헤미아에서 발견된다. 서기관(scribe)인 에스라는 바빌론에서 두루마리들을 가져와 역시 그 두루마리들의 내용을 큰소리로 읽음으로써 그 두루마리를 예루살렘에 공표하였다. (느헤미아 8장) 이 두루마리들은 대부분 토라의 본문을 담고 있었다. 바빌론은 유대인들의 유배 생활 동안 그리고 그 이후에도 중요한 성서제작센터가 되었다. |

1 이스라엘 자손이 자기들의 성읍에 거주하였더니 일곱째 달에 이르러 모든 백성이 일제히 수문 앞 광장에 모여 학사 에스라에게 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 명령하신 모세의 율법책을 가져오기를 청하매 2 일곱째 달 초하루에 제사장 에스라가 율법책을 가지고 회중 앞 곧 남자나 여자나 알아들을 만한 모든 사람 앞에 이르러 3 수문 앞 광장에서 새벽부터 정오까지 남자나 여자나 알아들을 만한 모든 사람 앞에서 읽으매 뭇 백성이 그 율법책에 귀를 기울였는데 4 그 때에 학사 에스라가 특별히 지은 나무 강단에 서고 그의 곁 오른쪽에

선 자는 맛디댜와 스마와 아나야와 우리야와 힐기야와 마아세야요 그의 왼쪽에 선 자는 브다야와 미사엘과 말기야와 하숨과 하스밧다나와 스가랴와 므술람이라 5 에스라가 모든 백성 위에 서서 그들 목전에 책을 펴니 책을 펼 때에 모든 백성이 일어서니라 6 에스라가 위대하신 하나님 여호와를 송축하매 모든 백성이 손을 들고 아멘 아멘 하고 응답하고 몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대고 여호와께 경배하니라 7 예수아와 바니와 세레뱌와 야민과 악굽과 사브대와 호디야와 마아세야와 그리다와 아사랴와 요사밧과 하난과 블라야와 레위 사람들은 백성이 제자리에 서 있는 동안 그들에게 율법을 깨닫게 하였는데 8 하나님의 율법책을 낭독하고 그 뜻을 해석하여 백성에게 그 낭독하는 것을 다 깨닫게 하니(개역개정판 느 8:1-8)
1-2 On the first day of the seventh month, the people came together in the open area in front of the Water Gate. Then they asked Ezra, who was a teacher of the Law of Moses, to read to them from this Law that the LORD had given his people. Ezra the priest came with the Law and stood before the crowd of men, women, and the children who were old enough to understand. 3 From early morning till noon, he read the Law of Moses to them, and they listened carefully.
4 Ezra stood on a high wooden platform that had been built for this occasion. Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah were standing to his right, while Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash Baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam were standing to his left. 5 Ezra was up on the high platform, where he could be seen by everyone, and when he opened the book, they all stood up.
6 Ezra praised the great LORD God, and the people shouted, "Amen! Amen!" Then they bowed with their faces to the ground and worshiped the LORD. 7-8 After this, the Levites Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah went among the people, explaining the meaning of what Ezra had read. (CEV Neh 8:1-8)
